Washington (November 27, 2023) Following Judge Patti Saris’ announcement of her intention to retire from regular active service as a United States District Court Judge, Senators Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) today announced they will reconvene an advisory committee to review and provide recommendations on candidates to be considered for this federal District Court vacancy. Applications will be accepted from a wide pool of candidates throughout the Commonwealth. Interested candidates must submit their applications to the Advisory Committee by December 11, 2023.

The Advisory Committee on Massachusetts Judicial Nominations will solicit applications for the federal District Court vacancy, interview candidates, and make recommendations to the Senators. The Advisory Committee comprises distinguished members of the Massachusetts legal community, including prominent academics and litigators, and is chaired by former U.S. District Court Judge Nancy Gertner. 

“This Committee plays a critical role in ensuring that diverse, experienced, and fair-minded judges are appointed to the federal bench throughout the Commonwealth,” said Senators Markey and Warren. “We’re looking forward to reading and reviewing the Committee’s recommendation for this important role.”

Completed applications must be received by the Advisory Committee by December 11, 2023.
