Washington (July 19, 2016) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), ranking Democrat on the Africa and Global Health subcommittee, released the following statement on the upcoming presidential elections in Gabon.

“I call on all Gabonese leaders to urgently work to ensure that the upcoming presidential elections on August 28 are conducted in a transparent, fair, and peaceful manner consistent with the democratic aspirations of the Gabonese people.

 

“In the days between now and the elections, politicians and parties from across the political spectrum should work with civil society, religious leaders and other community leaders to demonstrate their commitment to peaceful and credible elections and to build the confidence of the people in the legitimacy of the democratic process in Gabon.”
