Washington (November 16, 2015) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) released the following statement today.

“We should not close our hearts or our doors to the women, children and families that are fleeing the Middle East to escape war and the daily terror, violence and chaos it brings. America has always been a refuge for the persecuted and oppressed. We can’t turn our back on our history or on those fleeing to find a shred of safety.

“We know that ISIS and other terrorists will attempt to exploit any loopholes in our systems to bring their deadly campaign to our shores. Whether it is on planes, on boats or through the refugee process, we must ensure that we have the strongest safeguards in place to keep terrorists from ever reaching our country. We need more information from the State Department, Department of Homeland Security and our international partners to understand if ISIS is using the refugee process to infiltrate borders, and we must fully and thoroughly vet all refugees to screen out any potential terrorist threats.”
