Washington (September 4, 2025) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), a member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, and Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) released the following statement after reports that the Trump administration will reconsider federal approval of Avangrid’s New England Wind 1 project. New England Wind 1 is set to provide 791 megawatts of energy to the region—enough energy to power 400,000 homes and provide $1.4 billion in savings for energy customers. On Friday, the administration announced it will unlawfully withdraw and terminate $679 million in funding for offshore wind projects, including nearly $34 million for the Salem Wind Port Project in Massachusetts.
“The New England Wind 1 project got a green light from the federal government, but the Trump administration only wants to throw up stop signs and speed bumps to prevent the construction of affordable, American-made energy. If the Trump administration continues its effort to cancel New England Wind 1, it will be killing union jobs, raising energy costs, hurting grid reliability, and undermining American competitiveness. Trump and his cabinet need to end their war on American energy and jobs,” the lawmakers said.
