Washington (October 16, 2013) - Senator Edward J. Markey (DMass.) released the following statement after voting in favor of the bipartisan Senate budget bill that would end the government shutdown and raise the debt ceiling.

"This 16day Tea Party temper tantrum has cost our economy $24 billion dollars, brought the United States to the brink of default, and caused our nation global embarrassment. The inflexible, ideologydriven extreme Tea Party faction of the Republican Party shut down most of the federal government and held the entire U.S. economy hostage, and for what?  To take away health insurance benefits from millions of Americans. It is time for the Republican Party to reject the obstructionism of its Tea Party faction. It is time to accept the fact that the Affordable Care Act is the law of the land. It is time for Congress move on, so we can engage in a sensible, bipartisan process to reduce our debt that balances spending cuts with new revenue. It is time to get back to the work of growing our economy and creating jobs."
