Washington (January 10, 2017) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) released the following statement on President Barack Obama’s final address in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois.

“During two terms, President Barack Obama has won historic victories on health care, Wall Street reform, has revived our automotive industry and has led a clean energy revolution in America. He pulled us out of the worst recession since the Great Depression, all the while reminding us that the best days are still ahead for our families and our nation.

President Obama has not been daunted by partisanship, prejudice or punditry. He may have had to use his own pen when obstructionist Republicans in Congress blocked progress, but his actions have made us safer, healthier and more prosperous. President Obama understands the importance of America’s global leadership and his efforts have only improved our standing in the world. Our democracy is stronger for his presidency, and we cannot allow division, inequality or discrimination to set us back or undermine our scared institutions and values.

“I pledge to continue President Obama’s innovation- and excellence-based agenda that will lead to economic growth and job creation across the Commonwealth and America.”
