March 3, 2005- Statement on Administration's Pursuit of the Nuclear Bunker Buster

“I am not at all surprised by the reports coming out of the IAEA that Iran may be building deep reinforced tunnels to store nuclear materials and technology. The Bush Administration's pursuit of a nuclear bunker buster weapon has signaled to Iran and others that the U.S. is seeking the capability to use a nuclear bunker buster weapon against them, so of course they are going to try to hide and bury their nuclear program.

"The Bush Administration telling other countries that they cannot have nuclear weapons while broadcasting plans for newer, bigger, more destructive U.S. nuclear weapons is the diplomatic equivalent of preaching temperance from the barstool. We are playing with radioactive fire and endangering millions of lives in the process using this transparent double standard to address nuclear proliferation.”
