Lawmakers get answers about how social media site collects and stores users’ information

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representatives Joe Barton (R-Texas) and Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), joined by other members of the Bi-Partisan Congressional Privacy Caucus, Reps. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) and Carolyn Maloney (D- N.Y.), today released the response to the October letter they sent to Facebook expressing concern that users’ personal information could be vulnerable to hackers. In October, The Wall Street Journal reported that a consumer requested all data that Facebook collected about his use and received a 1,200 page file that included information like chat conversations and even the various IP addresses he used to log onto the site.

In their response, Facebook answered questions about personal data storage, how and when they delete private information and the technical challenges Facebook faces when it comes to fulfilling requests to remove data from the site.

Members appreciate Facebook’s response and look forward to future dialogue with the company about privacy issues.
