Washington (February 27, 2015) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass), a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, praised President Obama for the nomination of Katherine Dhanani as the first United State Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Somalia since 1991.

“I applaud the appointment of a U.S. ambassador to Somalia. As part of the larger U.S. efforts to support stability and democratic growth in a country that has struggled for too long, this appointment sends a positive signal to our African and other international partners that the United States is serious in our approach to Somalia and the Horn of Africa. I look forward to a full diplomatic presence in Mogadishu as security conditions permit, and I look forward to working with Ms. Dhanani through the confirmation process.”
