Medford, MA—U.S. Representative Edward J. Markey (D-MA) is pleased to announce that he is now accepting applications for Congressional Nominations to the United States Service Academies.

“It is a tremendous honor to be able to nominate students to United States Service Academies,” Rep. Markey said.  “I encourage any student interested in West Point, the Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy, or the Merchant Marine Academy to contact my Medford District Office for information on how to apply.”

Students entering their senior year of high school in September of 2009 are invited to apply for nominations to the United States Service Academies.  The four U.S. Service Academies that require nominations are the Air Force Academy, Merchant Marine Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, and the West Point Military Academy.

Representative Markey advises each applicant to visit each academy’s website and contact the corresponding Office of Admissions.  In order to be considered for a Congressional Nomination, the applicant must be a U.S. citizen; a legal resident of Massachusetts Seventh District; between the ages of 17 and 22 upon entering the academy; and unmarried with no obligation to a dependent.

The Congressman also asks that all interested students submit a personal data form; a high school transcript; SAT and/or ACT scores; and three letters of recommendation.  These four items must be submitted to the Rep. Markey’s Medford District Office by November 1, 2009.

A Service Academy Board will be appointed to interview each applicant in December of 2009.  The Congressional Nomination process ends on January 31, 2010.

If interested students or their parents have any questions about the nomination process, they may contact Rocco DiRico in the Medford District Office, at 781-396-2900.
