Washington (December 2, 2025) - Senators Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), member of the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee today released the following statement following the House’s introduction of the Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA 2.0).

“I am disappointed that House Republicans are pushing forward a weaker version of COPPA 2.0 that would strip states of essential tools to safeguard children and teens online. The Senate version of COPPA 2.0 reflects years of careful work and strong consensus among a broad, bipartisan group of stakeholders. Weakening these protections is a gift to Big Tech and a blow to families. The House should abandon these changes and prioritize protecting young people over Big Tech’s bottom line.”

Senator Markey reintroduced COPPA 2.0 in the Senate in March 2025. In June 2025, COPPA 2.0 passed unanimously through the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee.
