Washington (April 27, 2021) – Today, the four leaders of Congress’s foreign relations subcommittees on Asia launched the #LetTaiwanHelp campaign to urge the World Health Organization (WHO) to invite Taiwan to participate in the 74th World Health Assembly (WHA). Senator Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asia, Senator Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Ranking Member of Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asia, Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (D-Cali.), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, and Representative Steve Chabot (R-Ohio), Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia are inviting parliamentarians in Congress and around the world to join this campaign to support Taiwan’s participation in the WHA from May 24 to June 1, 2021.

In launching the #LetTaiwanHelp campaign, the Members made the following statement:

“The Chinese government’s blatant politicization of Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Organization not only jeopardizes the health and security of Taiwan’s 23.5 million citizens, but also denies the global community a reliable partner in the fight against infectious diseases.

“In addition to being a model for how to combat the spread of COVID-19, Taiwan has been an historic partner on global health security, helping lead the fight against deadly diseases such as AIDS, tuberculosis, and Ebola, and providing critical humanitarian aid following natural disasters.

“Congress stands united in our support for Taiwan’s health and security. We urge the World Health Organization to invite Taiwan to participate in the upcoming 74th World Health Assembly.”

As part of the #LetTaiwanHelp campaign, Members of Congress and international Parliamentarians shared videos explaining why they support Taiwan’s inclusion in the WHO and WHA.
