Washington (January 22, 2022) – Senator Edward J. Markey released the following statement today on the 49th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade U.S. Supreme Court decision.

“As we mark the 49th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Republicans in states and courthouses across the country are working to decimate abortion rights, erase nearly five decades of Supreme Court precedent, and make it nearly impossible for low-income, Black, Brown, immigrant, and young women in dozens of states to access reproductive health care,” said Senator Markey. “In 2021 alone, more than 100 abortion restrictions were signed into law across our country, and now Roe sits on the Supreme Court’s chopping block. Republicans have launched a coordinated assault on reproductive freedom across the country, and this year’s anniversary must serve as a clarion call for the U.S. Senate to finally pass the Women’s Health Protection Act. It’s time for our laws to finally recognize that abortion is essential, life-saving health care.”
