EPA Administrator Zeldin announced that the EPA released a proposal to repeal the “endangerment finding”
Washington (July 29, 2025) - Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), a member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, today released the following statement after the Trump administration released a proposal to overturn the “endangerment finding,” which establishes that greenhouse gases threaten the public health and welfare of current and future generations and, as a result, should be regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Clean Air Act. The endangerment finding derives from the landmark 2007 Supreme Court case, Massachusetts v. EPA, which found that EPA had to make a determination on the contributions of greenhouse gases to climate change and then take regulatory action as a result.
“This attack on the endangerment finding is nothing more than a lie being told to the American people. Arguing that greenhouse gases emissions don’t put us in danger by causing climate change is like saying that a lit match can’t put us in danger by burning down the house,” said Senator Markey. “This decision to argue that climate change isn’t dangerous isn’t driven by the law, and certainly isn’t driven by the science. This is nothing more than selling out Americans’ safety and future just for the convenience of polluters. Trump, Zeldin, and their whole cabal of polluters should be ashamed.”
Earlier today, Senator Markey hosted a protest with advocates from Climate Action Campaign, Environmental Defense Fund, WE ACT for Environmental Justice, Moms Clean Air Force, and the Union of Concerned Scientists outside of EPA headquarters in Washington, D.C. to attack the Trump administration’s proposal. Senator Markey previously challenged EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin on the endangerment finding issue during Zeldin’s Senate confirmation hearing in February.
