Senator Markey hosts Mayor Wu on his podcast

Boston (April 5, 2024) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) today released his ninth episode of the “The Ed Markey Podcast,” featuring Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, to discuss her efforts to make Boston a Green New Deal city that inspires the nation. The two spotlighted the Senator’s Freedom to Move Act bill to make public transit a public good, the city of Boston’s fare free bus pilot program, and the $11 million dollar Inflation Reduction Act investment in Boston’s tree canopy to help fight extreme heat and protect the city from climate disasters.

Senator Markey on opposition to the Green New Deal: “Every night the Green New Deal is criticized, and they're saying it’s socialism. ‘Look what you’re doing. You’re subsidizing wind and solar and energy efficiency and trees. That’s crazy. That’s just socialism.’ But we say back to them, you didn't complain for 100 years of subsidies for the oil, gas, and coal industries. And all we’re saying is give us some of that socialism to remediate these environmental justice problems, while creating jobs and protecting families.”

Every Friday until Earth Day, “The Ed Markey Podcast” will feature a new episode with a variety of climate champions—from lawmakers to youth organizers and environmental justice activists. “The Ed Markey Podcast” spotlights how the Green New Deal movement has transformed the United States’ national climate agenda by creating new union jobs, delivering long-overdue justice, and reducing dangerous pollution.

Senator Markey and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) recently unveiled a new report, “Five Years of the Green New Deal,” detailing what the Green New Deal means for good-paying clean jobs, environmental justice, and climate action, and providing a path forward for years to come.
