MEDFORD, MA – Today, Congressman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), dean of the Massachusetts Congressional delegation, released the following statement after confirmation of the death of ousted Libyan President Moammar Gaddafi.

The people of Libya have finally been liberated from the man President Reagan famously called the ‘Mad Dog of the Middle East’. Moammar Gaddafi spent decades committing unspeakable brutalities against his own people. Today, we remember the victims of the Lockerbie bombing and their families and all those whose suffered at the hands of this cruel tyrant. It is just that the movement for democracy that spread throughout the Middle East has swept through Libya and empowered its people to bring an end to Gaddafi’s oil-fueled dictatorship. Now that Gaddafi is gone and this chapter of horror over, Libyans have the historic opportunity to chart their own future.”
