WASHINGTON, D.C. - Representative Edward J. Markey (D-MA), who authored legislation in 2007 to stop the so-called “surge” of U.S. troops in Iraq, this afternoon voted against another $162.5 billion to fund the war in Iraq.

Rep. Markey said, “Five years on and no plan for withdrawal in sight, we cannot keep funding this open-ended war. Our men and women in uniform have served with bravery and honor, but the cost of this war has been far too high.

“While the president has decided to leave the businesses of ending the war to his successor, I will continue to work with my Democratic colleagues in Congress to find an effective and responsible way to end this misguided war.”

Separately, Rep. Markey voted for provisions that require U.S. troops to begin redeployment from Iraq within 30 days of enactment and increase veterans benefits for the veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan.
