WASHINGTON (May 24, 2012) – Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), a leading voice in Congress for nuclear safety, today praised the Obama administration for their nomination of Allison Macfarlane to replace Greg Jaczko as the chair of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Below is the statement of Rep. Markey, the top Democrat on the Natural Resources Committee and a senior member of the Energy and Commerce Committee.

President Obama has picked an able successor to Chairman Jaczko, and I believe Dr. Macfarlane will keep alight the torch of safety Chairman Jaczko has carried for so many years. It is my hope, once Dr. Macfarlane is confirmed, that the rest of the Commissioners will work  with her to quickly adopt the remaining post-Fukushima safety recommendations and engage in a constructive dialogue about nuclear safety.”
