WASHINGTON, D.C. - Representative Edward J. Markey (D-Malden) hailed Vice President Joe Biden’s announcement today of over $100 million in senior nutrition assistance, including over $2 million for Massachusetts, as part of the economic recovery package which was signed into law last month.

“The economic recovery package will provide over $2 million to the Bay State for critical nutrition programs for our elderly,’ said Markey.

“These tough economic times are hitting seniors especially hard, so I am pleased that the recovery package will be sending them some much needed relief. Seniors should never have to choose between buying medicine and buying food.”

To help older Americans maintain their health and independence, the economic recovery package includes $100 million for meals and nutrition services under the Older Americans Act. In December, Rep. Markey signed on to a letter asking Speaker Pelosi for additional funding in the economic recovery package, including senior nutrition programs.

According to the White House, the program is expected to provide nearly 14 million meals nationwide.
