REP. MARKEY AND INTERNATIONAL WMD COMMISSION CHAIRMAN, HANS BLIX, DISCUSS RECENT REPORT AND US-INDIA NUCLEAR DEAL

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Dr. Hans Blix, Chairman of the international Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission which recently released its report titled “Weapons of Terror,” met today with Rep. Edward Markey (D-MA), Co-chair of the Bipartisan Task Force on Nonproliferation in Congress. Dr. Blix is also the former chief arms inspector for the UN in Iraq.

Dr. Blix and Rep. Markey discussed the Commission’s concerns about the stagnation in international and arms control and disarmament.

With regard to the proposed nuclear technology deal between the United States and India, Dr. Blix said “I am concerned about the impact on the proliferation of nuclear weapons.  These concerns could be met if India, Pakistan, the United States, and other states committed themselves to the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty and a verifiable international treaty stopping all production of fissile material for weapons. Absent such commitments, the proposed deal risks fueling an arms race in Asia.”
