Washington, D.C. -- Today, Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA), a senior member of the House Homeland Security Committee, released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision in the Hamdan v. Rumsfeld case:

“Americans want to fight terrorism and the terrorists who seek to destroy us, but they do not want to shred the Constitution in doing so and it is appropriate that the Supreme Court has stepped in to rein in this Administration’s pattern of over-reaching and avoidance of judicial and congressional oversight.

“The Supreme Court has verified what so many Americans have thought to be true – that the indefinite holding of individuals at Guantanamo Bay and the use of special, secret military tribunals that were not congressionally or judicially approved and reviewed is wrong.”

Rep. Markey is the author of the bill to end the Bush Administration’s practice of extraordinary rendition to countries known to engage in torture, H.R. 952 (Torture Outsourcing Prevention Act).
