Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-MA), a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, released the following statement in reaction to Energy Secretary Sam Bodman’s announcement that Ambassador Linton Brooks, the head of the NNSA, was dismissed:

“While it may be appropriate to begin to address the incessant string of security, safety and management lapses at Department of Energy nuclear weapons facilities with the removal of high-level managers, I am afraid that it will take more than a new boss to fix the problems, which are far more systemic and pervasive in nature.  The new Democratic Congress will exercise the oversight responsibility that was neglected by the Republicans in order to get to the bottom of the dysfunctional nuclear weapons complex’s problems."
