"Torture of any kind is unacceptable. And when it occurs it is the obligation of just nations to address known injustices. Not only was Maher Arar a victim of injustice when he was whisked away from his family at JFK in 2002 while returning to Canada from a vacation and sent to Jordan and Syria to be tortured, but once again he was denied justice when his case was dismissed by a Brooklyn District Court Judge.
When will justice be served for Maher Arar? How many other “Maher Arars” are there out there that have been wronged by the U.S. government practice of outsourcing torture – whose lives have been tossed into the black hole of a distant prison or whose cases have been virtually disappeared by the U.S legal system? The US has lost all moral authority to push for democracy and justice around the world while continuing to circumvent it through this secretive torture process.
There can be no justification for torture neither at the hands of the US government officials nor at the request of the US government. Congress must stop this practice immediately by passing the Torture Outsourcing Prevention Act HR 952.”
