Washington (July 30, 2025) - Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) released the following statement today on the Joint Resolutions of Disapproval of Arms Sales.
“The actions of Prime Minister Netanyahu’s government, fueled by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and supported by the Trump administration, are not bringing peace to Israel and Gaza. The ceasefire has collapsed, hostage release negotiations have stalled, and innocent Palestinian children and families in Gaza are starving and suffering. We cannot stand idly by. The United States must not be complicit. We have a moral obligation to ensure humanitarian aid reaches those who need it now. The Netanyahu government must stop blocking aid from reaching starving Palestinians in Gaza.
“I voted to support the two Joint Resolutions of Disapproval because the Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs) and large-scale bombs go beyond what is needed for Israel’s current defense and would only worsen the humanitarian catastrophe devastating Gaza. These 1,000-pound bombs have caused untold civilian harm and destruction and do not bring us closer to the ceasefire we need to get humanitarian aid in and to get the hostages out. This war must come to an end, so that we can stop the famine in Gaza, release the remaining hostages to their families, and begin to put Israel and Palestine on a path towards lasting peace.”
