Washington (September 18, 2015) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), top Democrat on the Subcommittee on Africa and Global Health, released the following statement on the situation in Burkina Faso.

“I am deeply disturbed by unfolding events in Burkina Faso and join the chorus of international observers who have condemned the unconstitutional seizure of power by elements of the Presidential Security Regiment.  The actions of the PSR threaten to inhibit the provision of U.S. foreign assistance.  I urge those behind these actions to stand down and permit Burkina’s democratic path to presidential elections in October to continue.”
