Washington (April 2, 2015) – United States Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), ranking member of the Africa and Global Health Subcommittee, released the following statement on the outcome of the Nigerian presidential election.  

“These elections are a victory for the Nigerian people, who went to the polls by the millions to cast their votes for progress and make their voices heard. I applaud them and support efforts that lead to the peaceful transfer of power in Nigeria. It is my hope that this ushers in a new era of cooperation, security and development for the people and government of Nigeria.”

Last month, Senator Markey joined a bipartisan group of U.S. Senators in letters to President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and General Buhariurging peaceful, transparent and credible elections.
