Markey Congratulates Gore, Pachauri on Nobel Acceptances

WASHINGTON (December 10, 2007) – Chairman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming congratulated former Vice President Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, led by Rajendra Pachauri, on their well-earned Nobel Peace Prize. Markey highlighted the urgency it raises to make headway in Bali this week, where world leaders are meeting to lay the groundwork for the next international climate agreement.

Below is the statement of Chairman Markey:

“This award recognizes not only the work of Mr. Gore and the IPCC, but the monumental challenge the world faces in global warming. Capping and reducing heat-trapping emissions on a global scale will require the highest level of cooperation among nations.

“The enormous contribution of Mr. Gore and the UN panel chaired by Rajendra Pachauri deserves the appreciation of the entire world. They have destroyed the excuse of ignorance that has long been used by world leaders to avoid taking action on climate change. In doing so, it raises the urgency to make real headway in Bali.

“It is time for the United States to concede the seriousness of this problem. The international community has come to the table in good faith to negotiate the next collective step, but we still have history’s most prolific greenhouse gas polluter opposing mandatory emissions reduction targets.  The sweeping energy bill passed by the House last week is an important beginning to putting the United States on a path to a clean energy future. But President Bush has yet to conclude even that carbon dioxide endangers our public health.  We cannot lead the world if our leaders don’t get it.”
