Washington (April 12, 2018) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today asked Secretary of State nominee Mike Pompeo to apologize to the Boston Muslim community for his statement after the 2013 Boston Marathon terrorist attack that American Muslim leaders were “potentially complicit” in violent acts for failing to speak out, even though the American Muslim community and its leaders had already condemned that attack. Mr. Pompeo refused to apologize.

Senator Markey: “Next Monday is the 5th anniversary of Patriots Day Marathon bombing in Boston. It, of course, was an horrific day in our history. And it was something that proved, once again, that we are Boston Strong.

“But following those attacks, you falsely alleged that American Muslim leaders were, quote, ‘potentially complicit’ in violent acts for failing to speak out, even though the American Muslim community and its leaders had already condemned that attack…

“Do you apologize to the Boston Muslim leadership for those comments in relationship to that incident. Do you apologize to them? … In your opinion, were they complicit?”
